OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has changed his display name on X from “Sam Altman” to “Ram Altman”, turning criticism of his recent comments about computer memory into an internet joke.
The change took place on November 4, 2026, after users suggested the new name in response to a debate over his remarks about random-access memory, commonly known as RAM. Altman kept his existing X username, @sama.
The exchange began when an X user joked about attracting Altman's attention with computer memory modules. Altman responded that the joke made him laugh. Another user then asked him to change his profile name to “Ram Altman”. He agreed, and his profile subsequently displayed the new name.
What started the RAM controversy?
The discussion followed Altman's appearance on the October 29 episode of the Cheeky Pint podcast, hosted by Stripe co-founder John Collison.
During a conversation about local artificial intelligence and the global supply of memory chips, Altman argued that keeping large amounts of DRAM in individual computers could be an inefficient use of limited resources if that memory is used only a small proportion of the time.
He estimated that such memory might be used around 5% of the time and argued that cloud data centres could make more intensive use of shared memory resources.
The comments attracted criticism from computer enthusiasts and users who want to run AI models locally. Critics questioned the idea that consumer computers should have less access to memory while large technology companies build increasingly powerful data centres.
The debate also gained attention because demand for memory hardware has been rising alongside the expansion of AI infrastructure.
Altman says he wants more RAM for everyone
After the reaction, Altman clarified his position on X. He said he wants the world to have abundant memory so people can install as much as they want in their computers.
He also said he had long supported significantly increasing global memory production and complained that his earlier comments had been taken out of context.
In another reply, he told a user: “I want you to have so much RAM. Let's build more.”
The clarification matters because his original remarks were about how to allocate limited memory supplies efficiently, not an announcement that consumers should be prevented from buying or installing RAM.
The “Ram Altman” name change appears to have been a playful response to the online joke rather than a formal change to his identity or account username.
What began as a debate about AI infrastructure and computer hardware has now produced an unlikely social-media moment: the head of OpenAI temporarily giving his own name a memory-related twist.
