Binance is investigating a major security breach involving an estimated $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency assets, making it potentially the largest crypto theft on record. The exchange says it will cover all losses and that customer funds are safe.
In a security update published on October 30, 2026, Binance said its preliminary investigation pointed to a possible compromise of a DevOps engineer’s laptop. The attacker allegedly used access to a service container to submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions. The investigation remains ongoing.
Binance said it had coordinated with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets. It also temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while carrying out security checks and working with law enforcement and blockchain intelligence firms.
The company said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked. It pledged to cover losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and corporate funds, and said it would publish a detailed technical report after completing its investigation.
Blockchain intelligence firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have linked the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor hacking group, according to the Associated Press. The attribution has not yet been presented as a final conclusion by Binance.
The incident highlights the security risks facing cryptocurrency exchanges, where compromised operational access can potentially enable large-scale unauthorised transfers. The final loss assessment, recovery efforts and full technical explanation remain important developments to watch.
