Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has arrived in Spain to receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, one of the country's most prestigious international honours. The award recognises his extraordinary football career, lasting influence on the sport and charitable work supporting disadvantaged children.
Messi arrived in Oviedo on Thursday, October 22, ahead of the official ceremony scheduled for Friday at the Teatro Campoamor. Hundreds of supporters gathered outside his hotel to welcome the Inter Miami captain, seeking autographs and photographs with the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner. The reception highlighted his enduring popularity in Spain, where he spent most of his professional career with Barcelona.
Why Messi Was Chosen for the Award
The Princess of Asturias Foundation announced Messi as the 2026 recipient on June 3. The jury praised his exceptional sporting achievements, remarkable consistency and commitment to helping children access education and healthcare.
According to the foundation, the award recognises more than his success on the pitch. It also acknowledges his conduct as a team player and his sustained charitable efforts, which have helped establish his reputation as a global sporting figure.
The selection is particularly significant because Messi becomes the first individual footballer to receive the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, according to his club, Inter Miami.
From Barcelona Star to World Champion
Messi's connection with Spain began when he joined Barcelona's youth academy as a teenager. He went on to become the club's most celebrated modern-era player, winning multiple domestic league titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies.
