Lionel Scaloni has reportedly reached an agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on a new contract that could keep him as Argentina’s head coach through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
According to Argentine media reports published on October 21, the agreement follows negotiations over the future of the coach, whose current contract is due to expire in December 2026. However, the deal is still awaiting a formal signature and official announcement from the AFA.
Reports indicate that the proposed contract would follow a “two-plus-two-year” structure. Scaloni would initially remain in charge through the 2028 Copa América, with a possible extension for another two years that could take him through the 2030 World Cup. Details about the second period have not been uniformly reported, so the final terms remain subject to official confirmation.
The reported agreement would provide continuity for Argentina following one of the most successful periods in the national team’s history under Scaloni. Appointed in 2018, he guided the side to the 2021 Copa América title, the 2022 Finalissima victory over Italy and Argentina’s third World Cup triumph in Qatar in 2022. The team then retained the Copa América title in 2024.
Those achievements have established Scaloni as a central figure in Argentina’s recent football success. His leadership has helped maintain a competitive team while managing a squad that includes experienced stars and younger players preparing to take on greater responsibilities.
Keeping Scaloni in charge would also give Argentina greater stability as preparations continue for future international tournaments. The 2028 Copa América and the 2030 World Cup are expected to be important milestones for a team seeking to remain among the leading forces in international football.
Negotiations over the coach’s future had attracted attention in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that both sides wanted to preserve the national team project. The latest coverage points to substantial progress, although the AFA has not yet publicly confirmed that the contract has been signed.
