Bangladesh have appointed left-arm spinner Nahida Akter as captain of their women’s Twenty20 international team, giving one of the country’s most experienced bowlers a new leadership role ahead of the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy in November.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the decision on October 18, 2026. Nahida replaces wicketkeeper-batter Nigar Sultana Joty, who stepped down from the T20I captaincy to focus on her individual game. Batter Sobhana Mostary has been appointed vice-captain.
The change marks a new phase for Bangladesh women’s cricket, with the team preparing for its next international assignment under a different leadership group. Nahida will initially hold the position for one year, after which the board plans to assess the situation ahead of the 2028 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Why Bangladesh Chose Nahida Akter
Nahida brings substantial international experience to the position. She made her international debut in 2015 and has played 113 T20 internationals for Bangladesh, taking 132 wickets, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha. That record places her among the country's most successful bowlers in the format.
Her appointment also offers continuity. Nahida served as Joty’s deputy from 2022, giving her several years of experience within the team's leadership structure before taking over the top role.
As a left-arm spinner, she has built her reputation through her bowling rather than batting. Her challenge as captain will be to translate that experience into broader team leadership, including managing decisions under pressure, working with the bowling attack and helping Bangladesh maintain consistency across a demanding international schedule.
Captaincy will bring responsibilities beyond individual performance. Nahida will need to work with the coaching staff and selectors, manage players in different roles and help the side respond when matches do not go according to plan.
Those demands will become clearer as she begins her tenure in competitive international cricket.
Joty Steps Aside but Remains Part of the Team
Joty's departure from the T20I captaincy does not mean she is leaving Bangladesh's leadership structure altogether. She will continue to captain the national side in one-day internationals.
