Bangladesh began their campaign in the 2026 SAFF Championship with a narrow 1-0 victory over Bhutan at the National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday, November 5, as substitute Mohammad Ibrahim scored the decisive goal in the second half.
The breakthrough arrived in the 69th minute, when Ibrahim found the net just five minutes after replacing Bishwanath Ghosh. He converted a pass from Zayyan Ahmed to give the home side all three points in their opening Group A fixture.
The victory gives Bangladesh an important early advantage in their pursuit of a place in the semi-finals, although their performance also exposed some familiar problems in front of goal.
Bangladesh struggle to convert first-half dominance
Bangladesh controlled much of the first half but failed to turn their attacking pressure into goals.
According to match coverage by T Times, the hosts enjoyed 64 percent possession and attempted 12 shots during the opening 45 minutes. However, Bhutan's defence held firm as Bangladesh repeatedly struggled with their finishing.
Coach Thomas Dooley made an unusual tactical decision by deploying defender Bishwanath Ghosh as the central striker.
Bishwanath had several opportunities to break the deadlock, including a header and attempts from close range, but could not find the target.
Bhutan also threatened towards the end of the first half. Goalkeeper Mehedi Hasan Srabon produced an important save to prevent Pema from putting the visitors ahead.
The teams went into the interval level at 0-0.
Ibrahim makes the difference
Bangladesh eventually found their breakthrough through a second-half substitution.
Ibrahim entered the match in place of Bishwanath and needed only five minutes to make an impact.
His 69th-minute finish settled the contest and rewarded Bangladesh for their sustained attacking pressure.
The goal also underlined the importance of Bangladesh's squad depth, with a substitute providing the decisive contribution when the starting attack had struggled to score.
Injury forces last-minute captaincy change
Bangladesh faced an unexpected setback before kick-off when captain Topu Barman suffered an injury during the warm-up.
Syed Quazem Kirmanee Shah replaced him in the starting lineup, while experienced midfielder Jamal Bhuyan took over the captain's armband.
The last-minute change forced Dooley to adjust his defensive arrangements before the match began.
Bangladesh were also without Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury, who was unavailable because of his club commitments.
Despite these challenges, the hosts managed to secure a clean-sheet victory.
What the result means for Bangladesh
The three points put Bangladesh in a strong early position in Group A, where they are competing against Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh will play their second group-stage match against Sri Lanka on November 11 at the National Stadium in Dhaka.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, scheduled for November 14. The tournament final is set for November 17.
Bangladesh last won the SAFF Championship in 2003, also on home soil. Their opening victory provides an encouraging start to the attempt to reclaim the regional title after a 23-year wait.
However, the narrow result also leaves room for improvement. Bangladesh will need greater attacking efficiency and more clinical finishing if they are to turn their home advantage into a serious championship challenge.
For now, Ibrahim's decisive contribution has given the hosts exactly what they needed: a winning start and three valuable points.
