Harry Kane has won the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to receive football’s most prestigious individual award. Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time at a ceremony in London on October 26.
The results delivered a landmark night for two established stars, with Kane rewarded for a prolific season at Bayern Munich and Putellas returning to the top of the women’s game.
Kane Ends England’s Long Wait
Kane’s victory ends England’s wait for another men’s Ballon d’Or winner since Michael Owen claimed the award in 2001. He becomes the fifth Englishman to win the prize, following Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen.
The Bayern Munich striker scored 61 goals for his club during the 2025–26 season, helping the German side secure a domestic league and cup double. He scored 73 goals for club and country across the campaign, according to England Football.
Kane finished ahead of France forward Kylian Mbappé, who placed second, and Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal, who finished third. Manchester City and Barcelona midfielder Rodri ranked fourth, while Lionel Messi completed the top five.
The result recognises a season in which Kane combined consistent goalscoring with success at club level. His award also adds a major individual honour to a career in which he has established himself as one of England’s leading forwards.
Speaking after receiving the trophy, Kane thanked his teammates, coaches and the people who had supported him throughout his career. He described the campaign as the best season of his career.
Putellas Wins a Third Women’s Ballon d’Or
Putellas claimed her third Women’s Ballon d’Or, adding to the awards she won in 2021 and 2022. The Spanish midfielder’s latest victory reinforces her place among the most decorated players in women’s football.
The ceremony also recognised the wider influence of Spanish football. Barcelona won the Women’s Club of the Year award, while manager Pere Romeu received the Women’s Coach of the Year honour. Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente won the men’s coaching award, and goalkeeper Unai Simón received the men’s goalkeeper prize.
