Freiburg moved to the top of the Bundesliga with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Schalke 04 on Sunday, while Real Betis produced one of La Liga’s most entertaining performances of the weekend with a 5-2 win over Osasuna. In Italy, Lazio defeated Monza 3-1 to remain level on points with Inter at the top of Serie A.
Across Europe, Sunday’s matches delivered late winners, attacking football and important developments in several domestic title races. Freiburg’s victory was particularly significant, as the German club continued an impressive start to the season despite finishing their match with ten players.
Freiburg Reach the Bundesliga Summit
Freiburg claimed all three points against Schalke after a match that appeared increasingly difficult following a second-half dismissal.
Maximilian Eggestein opened the scoring for the home side in the 10th minute, giving Freiburg an early advantage. Schalke responded through Adrian Gantenbein around the half-hour mark, restoring parity and setting up a competitive contest.
The decisive moment came in the 64th minute, when Yuito Suzuki received a second yellow card and Freiburg were reduced to ten men.
Schalke had an opportunity to take control against their numerical advantage, but Freiburg continued to threaten. Their persistence paid off five minutes before the end, when Japan international Keisuke Goto scored the winning goal with a header.
The 2-1 result lifted Freiburg to 13 points, putting them ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. Defending champions Bayern Munich remained third with 11 points after drawing 2-2 with Augsburg on Saturday.
For Freiburg, the result offered more than three points. It demonstrated the team's ability to manage pressure, defend under difficult circumstances and find a decisive moment late in a match.
However, reaching the top in October does not guarantee a sustained title challenge. Freiburg will need to maintain their consistency as the season progresses and the leading clubs attempt to close the gap.
