Bangladesh’s measles outbreak has claimed 1,249 lives, including deaths among people with measles-like symptoms, since March 15, according to health-authority figures released on Thursday, October 29.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported seven additional deaths during the latest 24-hour reporting period, which began at 8am on Wednesday. The same period saw 1,315 suspected and confirmed cases reported nationwide, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
The cumulative death toll comprises 1,144 deaths among people with suspected measles or measles-like symptoms and 105 deaths attributed to confirmed measles. The distinction matters because not every reported death has been laboratory-confirmed as measles-related.
More than 23,000 confirmed cases reported
Since March 15, Bangladesh has recorded 226,357 suspected measles cases and 23,695 laboratory-confirmed infections, according to the latest figures.
During the most recent 24-hour period, health authorities recorded 1,251 new suspected cases and 64 newly confirmed infections. These figures represent different reporting categories and should not be added to the cumulative totals without accounting for their separate classifications.
The DGHS also reported that 201,468 patients with suspected measles had been admitted to hospitals since March 15. Of these, 193,301 had been discharged by October 29.
The outbreak has placed particular concern on protecting young children. In reporting published on October 17, Reuters cited World Health Organization data indicating that children under five accounted for 94% of reported deaths in the period covered by its analysis.
Vaccination remains central to the response
Bangladesh has undertaken emergency vaccination efforts to reach children who missed routine immunisation. A nationwide catch-up campaign launched on September 26 aimed to vaccinate 3.4 million children aged six to 59 months, including children who had previously missed vaccination opportunities.
The campaign was scheduled to run through October 31, according to a September report by bdnews24.com. Its progress and the number of children successfully vaccinated are important indicators to monitor as the deadline approaches.
